Addictive Apothecary is a family-based black-owned business. Owner Millicent Richardson created it because her daughter wanted more mommy-daughter time, and she asked if they could make candles together. Richardson was always buying candles and was often unhappy with them. Much research went into learning the process of candle making. The newly-minted African American business owner also had to find quality suppliers in order to ensure that her candles were several notches above others on the market. The mommy-daughter team started giving the candles away as gifts, then the pair took to selling them at their local flea market for fun. The candles soon came into high demand. Friends and family members began to place orders for gifts. Then it appeared that the word was getting about their candles. The rave started, and Addictive Apothecary was born. The company has expanded, and now sells body-care products as well.

Growing up, her mother was an avid quilter, and she also sewed a lot of Jamille’s clothing. These processes were always interesting to Jamille. Still, it wasn’t until college that she found her calling in the fiber arts. Jamille spent hours honing her craft and eventually very good at embroidery, weaving, and screen printing. African Ancestry is one of the leading black-owned businesses in operation. It helps transform the way people view themselves and the way they see Africa. Dr. Rick Kittles and Gina Paige founded African Ancestry in 2003. It is the world leader in tracing maternal and paternal lineages of African descent. It has helped more than 500,000 people re-connect with the roots of their family tree. Most companies can only tell what continent one has originated from, but not what country. African Ancestry has the industry’s largest and most comprehensive database, with over 30,000 indigenous African samples. African Ancestry determines specific countries. It can also find specific ethnic groups of origin with an unrivaled level of detail and accuracy. This black-owned business provides a unique service to the black community, and most importantly, protects the privacy of the user by refusing to sell or misuse their DNA after testing. It improves the wellbeing of people across the African diaspora and helps those across the world reconnect with their roots.

AFROTHREADS™ is more than an online fabric store—we aim to preserve and promote authentic African art and culture. Did you know that the majority of “African prints” on the market are not actually designed or made by Africans? To combat this, we have partnered with artisans and companies from different parts of the continent in order to share the history, technique, and meaning behind a variety of handmade and printed African fabrics. We encourage creativity and cultural appreciation: with knowledge and respect, anyone can proudly own, wear, and create with African prints and textiles. As Afro-diasporans, we are always looking for more ways to incorporate African art into both our wardrobes and our homes. Shop our growing collection of accessories and decor, which highlights the beauty and versatility of different African fabrics. We also strive for zero waste of these precious materials. We recycle leftover fabric whenever possible, and we are happy to collaborate with and/or donate to other creatives. Please contact us if interested!
