"Avant-garde" means to be innovative. It means to push the boundaries of the accepted. To be avant-garde, one has to explore new possibilities in the artistic world. Avant-garde is what founder and CEO Myeshia Brown kept in mind when she created the brand from her kitchen in 2014. A divine revelation inspired Brown to turn a love for candles into a black-owned business. She began researching the candle market. She also tested variations of wax, wicks, and fragrance combinations. For over 20 months, she put hours into creating the formula. She got what would become the golden recipe for the Avant-garde Home candle and oil line. It was important for Brown to do more than just "create another candle company." She wanted to create an Avant-garde fragrance experience. That experience is now one of the thriving Black-owned companies in Houston.
