Did you know that the majority of “African prints” on the market are not actually designed or made by Africans? To combat this, we have partnered with artisans and companies from different parts of the continent in order to share the history, technique, and meaning behind a variety of handmade and printed African fabrics. We encourage creativity and cultural appreciation: with knowledge and respect, anyone can proudly own, wear, and create with African prints and textiles. As Afro-diasporans, we are always looking for more ways to incorporate African art into both our wardrobes and our homes. Achiaa likes to connect with her Ghanaian roots through all of her endeavors, and Amania Afrik is no different. Thus, she wears African print clothing and often adds a headwrap to her outfits. This love and passion for African prints fueled her pursuit. She creates youthful styles using African print fabrics. This passion led to the birth of Amania Afrik. This jewel among black-owned companies focuses on delivering the best handmade fashion pieces using wax prints from West Africa. Amania Afrik’s mission is to share the beauty of Africa with everyone. It also works to provide sources of income to women in Accra. The company believes in delivering the best handmade Ankara clothing. Hence it works to bring quality to its customers.

Kafayat Tomi Giwa, founder of Ankara Crowns, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents are very fashionable Nigerians. When she decided to start her business, she hoped to create wearable items that incorporated her culture and flair. She wanted to make clothes that wearers could mix into any wardrobe. Her desire was to sew clothing that buyers could wear daily in very casual ways. Whenever her mom styled my hair with "irun kiko" the teasing was agonizing and relentless! But that push is what made Giwa want to start a brand that would lift up her cultural heritage while acknolwedging the clash between her “Americanness” and her culture. At one point, Giwa felt like wearing anything that was African, no matter how much she loved it, was not worth the tears. She can now express her “Africanness” with her black-owned clothing brand, Ankara Crowns.

Aqua Waterproof Headwear started as a bond between college friends, Khadijah and Kiana, and led to the development of an idea to create a Black-owned business called the Kay & Kay Group. They specialize in 100% WATERPROOF yet fashionable headwear – Aqua Waterproof Headwear. Both women understood the versatility of natural hair. They shared the frustrations with the existing options for keeping their hair dry, and they know the time, effort, and financial resources it takes to maintain hairstyles. They saw a need to provide a better solution and to find something that solved this dilemma. In their quest to protect hair from watersports, rain, and humidity, they tried various products. As I Am hair is a natural hair care brand. It markets unique and exclusively formulated hair products. Dr. Ali N Sayed, a business owner, and hair care chemist, founded the brand. Women of color have always asked him about products to care for their tightly coiled hair. He has developed products for other successful, well-known brands. He decided to research something special for this emerging consumer group, many of whom desire to style and care for their own hair. Their desire for returning to natural often went deeper than the outward appearance. With his team, he began to formulate samples from cleansers to curl definers. Over time, a beautiful array of products was born, called As I Am. It consists of 11 products designed for tightly coiled hair made from the finest organic ingredients. The line then became a quick success.
