Mikayla Murphy is 17 years old and the creator/founder of Shades of My Melanin. While attending her first Black Lives Matter protest, she looked around her, noticed that there were many different cultures representing the movement and was inspired. It was in that moment she knew she wanted to create a business that empowers women of color to be bold, and confident in their own skin, and embrace who they are. She launched Shades of My Melanin on July 13th, 2020 and within her first two weeks, she reached and surpassed her monthly sales goal fulfilling over 50 orders. As an entrepreneur, a student-athlete, a ministry leader and club founder/director, starting this business has really helped her learn balance, perseverance, determination, and has taught her what it means to be confident and how to see the beauty in others. At Shades of My Melanin, our goal is to not only offer products that make you feel beautiful in your own skin but to offer products that tell a story for each and every person who wears them. We offer fun, colorful, and creative products that can be worn by all ages. When wearing our products, our goal is for you to feel confident, empowered, bold, and seen. Along with offering products to empower women of color, we want our products to reach many different groups of people and to inspire them to step out of their comfort zone. Shades of My Melanin is committed to using our platform to give back to causes that are near and dear to our hearts. Created in 2015, Kultured Misfits is a lifestyle, sport and ready-to-wear brand based out of Atlanta, Georgia. With a heavy influence from culture found in music, film, and art, we are driven to create timeless work by portraying an aesthetic that is uniquely our own to impact our everyday life. Kultured Misfits is more than just a clothing line; it’s a lifestyle, a movement for kultured individuals everywhere. Determined to cater to a unique group of people that defy labels, stereotypes, and the boring norms that have yet to include misfits. Now, these misfits are the threads of society that hold us together. They encompass a body of knowledge that creates such a kulturally rich society, but somehow don’t fit in with the crowd. From artists, scholars, creatives, and dreamers...misfits are regarded collectively. So you’re probably wondering what a Kultured Misfit is, right? Imagine someone who knows no bounds in their journey. The outsiders. The nomads. They listen, learn, create, and can put the pieces of the puzzle together and give true meaning to living. From the outside looking in, they are true individuals without a doubt. They were never meant to fit in a box, and probably didn’t notice the box to begin with. We believe that the only way kulture will redefine itself is if we have the mentality of a misfit.

Ruth Nathan’s Chief Designer, Nicole R. Brown, is a young black woman in the midst of a passionate love affair with all things stately, swanky and dandy. Her fascination with the transformative quality of a well-dressed person propelled her to create the brand—making her the odd duck in an industry largely dominated by male designers. It is her desire that Ruth Nathan’s not only make customers look spectacular but feel spectacular as well, positively influencing them to feel better about themselves. It is a known fact that when one dresses well, one feels better—and from an outfit that is well put together, that makes one walk with pride, the Urban Peacock emerges. Nicole’s artistry is inspired by her travels. For her, the childhood game of “I Spy” never ended, and her globe-trekking has only accelerated the rate of play. As a child, she would hear someone say, “I see a blue house,” but would herself would see much more: deep greens and indigo and smoke purples and slate greys. Today, she enjoys taking everyday objects and places—some industrial and others more delicate—and turning that inspiration into luxurious textiles. One such environment is a shipping port; the lines and colors of the shipping containers transported her immediately and completely, emblazoning themselves in her mind. Through this lens, the Ports Collection was born. When inspiration strikes, Nicole translates her vision into a textile pattern by sketching it on her computer and creating the fabrics from there. Ruth and Nathan are Nicole’s maternal grandparents. Originally from Greenville, Mississippi, Grandpa Nathan was a tailor and a gentleman whose dapper wardrobe was outshone only by his character. This brand pays homage to those roots. Oh, and he was occasionally known to wear the hell out of a bow tie.

Jet Noire is based in Atlanta, GA. Jet Noire was born out of Mya's core belief in the seamless fusion between fashion & identity. When you get dressed every morning your outfit reflects the time and place you’re in at that moment. It’s an opportunity to show the world how you’re coming. An up & coming fashion designer, Mya is known for empowering women to express their identities authentically through fashion. She is a huge believer that fashion & identity are blended together. Just like any other art form, fashion can be shaped to reflect emotions. Growing up, Mya’s outfit choices often stood out from others. She quickly realized that it wasn’t normal to try and customize private school uniforms. It wasn’t normal for the stylist to allow you to change your own outfit at shoots. Little by little she began to take note of her love for fashion. Eventually, she knew it was time for her voice to be heard and the rest is history.

I am a visual artist who has been drawing most of my life & I have always been drawn to black cultural representation. I have been known for my realistic portraitures and caricatures. So when I decided to go natural my new interest "naturally" led me to create art featuring Sistahs with natural hairstyles but I also wanted to encourage others on the journey, so my first thought was to put these images on t-shirts. The first incarnation of the idea was Infinite Art Tees & I printed up the tees myself for awhile and then closed it down a few years later after equipment issues. Later, I revived the biz in it's current incarnation as Black Art Tees. I now feature an expanded line of men, women, unisex & kid's tees (natural hair pride, plus size pride, black pride, black history & political, etc), along with leggings, tank tops, hoodies, swimwear, sneakers, travel bags, backpacks, jogging pants--just to name a few. lol...I am constantly in creative mode and coming up with new ideas & products for my customers. This is a total labor of love & I hope it shows!
