I am a visionary, a mom, and wife to my husband Art for 18 years. My favorite piece of advice, comes from my husband which is “You should just try it and if it doesn’t work you can always try something else.” I think one thing that set me apart from others is our attention to details. I want to ensure our customer has a great experience with us from customer service to the thoughtfulness that goes into our products. Someone once told me that no business is perfect, however, how you handle any and all situations is a true testament on how great your business really is and that if you ever make a mistake fix it graciously.

Kendal Brown launched 228 Grant Street Candle Co. out of his kitchen in March 2016. Brown was always in search of the best-scented candles. One day while putzing through a home décor store, Brown stumbled across the perfect specimen. It had a delicate fragrance and was in a simple, beautiful jar. In that instant, he had an undeniable moment of inspiration. He knew he could make luxury scented candles like this one. He went home and watched every candle-making video he could find. He experimented with the different waxes and fragrances for about four months. Then he purchased a bunch of candle supplies. Brown passed the candles along to friends and family for months and received positive feedback. He designed the logo, the website, and the packaging, and then finalized the six fragrance profiles currently in the line. Word spread, and when he started receiving orders from people he didn't even know, he knew he was onto something. These candles make the perfect gifts, or treats for some self care.

African American business owner Aba Gyepi-Garbrah is a Certified Aromatherapist. Gyepi-Garbrah founded Aba Love Apothecary, one of the top-notch black-owned skincare brands. The love of plant medicine led her to a discovery of the uses of exotic flowers and precious oils in skincare. In this journey, she also came across sacred woods and resins. She mined the beneficial ingredients from these materials. Gyepi-Garbrah received professional training from the New York Institute of Aromatics, where she cultivated her skills in olfactory art. She also studied natural healing through the senses. Aba chooses its ingredients based on energetics and beneficial healing properties. She is also a stickler for aromatic harmony and purity and uses only genuine essential oils, absolutes, resins, plant and seed oils.
